The Power of our Industrial History. Like much of the country, upstate New York was greatly influenced by the railroads and rivers, and their ability to bring products to larger urban markets. This can be clearly seen by the architecture on the village main streets through which the tracks and rivers ran. From timber and tanning to bluestone, to farm products – the western Catskills is a place whose wealth has always been in its natural resources and healthy, recreational opportunities.
Today, the industrial base of the county has shrunk considerably but is holding on due to the railroad’s replacement - an interstate highway to our north. Much commerce here has been replaced by internet based businesses, entrepreneurs servicing the local and weekender communities, and tourism. How will Delaware County be shaped by the growing global and online economies? Pretty powerful stuff.
